I need some advice from other drivers. First, I consider myself a courteous and law-abiding driver. I have never ran a red light in my years of driving nor have I idled on the passing lane to prohibit others from passing. I certainly would not do anything senseless that would jeopardize the lives of others including mine. Today, I was trying to make a right turn on a green light onto the next street. Before I could do that, there were an abundant of pedestrians crossing the street, which I did not mind at all. I stopped my vehicle, watched and waited patiently for them to finish crossing the street safely. As a driver, we have to yield to the pedestrians and ensure their safety. Finally, everyone made it across the street. I was now ready to turn until I looked up at the traffic light which had turned red. Now it was impossible for me to complete the turn since there was a sign that clearly prohibited that action. Also, there was a traffic camera looming above that intersection that was ready to snap a picture of the sneaky culprit. To make matters worse, my vehicle was now completely stuck on top of the pedestrian crosswalk. My question is, how do I avoid this problem in the future? Did I do the right thing by staying there? Would I be considered a dumbass for this move? Please be honest. by-tor, please feel free to chime in. Thank you all!
I think the general rule is, once you've entered the intersection (whether waiting for peds or turning vehicles) and the light turns red, you should clear the intersection by proceeding through. Two things you DON'T want to do-- 1) Stay in place and block traffic and- 2) Back up-- Don't back up!
