Car accident along Golden Glades Interchange claims life of young girl
NORTH MIAMI-DADE, Fla. (WSVN) -- A young girl on the way to church with her mother was killed after a man lost control of his car along a South Florida highway.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the accident occurred around 9 a.m. Sunday as the gray Honda Accord attempted to exit from the eastbound lanes of the Palmetto Expressway to the southbound lanes of Interstate 95.
FHP says the driver of the car, identified as Emilio Francisco Cabieses, drove with such speed that his car launched from the ramp along the Golden Glades Interchange and went airborne for over 70 feet.
The car would eventually land on top of the roof of Shirley Newchurch's brown Plymouth, before rolling down a 50 to 60 foot embankment. "The gray vehicle while airborne struck the roof of the brown vehicle," said Lieutenant Pat Santangelo of Florida Highway Patrol.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue pronounced Cabieses and 12-year-old Shaunty Warren dead on the scene.
Cabieses' passenger, identified as Carlos Cohen, along with Newchurch remain in critical condition at Jackson Memorial Hospital.
Police say Cabieses has a lengthy driving record including driving under the influence and speeding
