DDD 2009

First, I'm a 53 year old commercial truck driver and motorcycle rider in addition to being a regular driver.  Here are some observations from across the country.  It's a turn signal, AKA a turn indicator.  It's not a right-of-way signal/indicator.  When I was learning to drive a few years ago, it was called the acceleration lane and we used it to accelerate to speed in order to make merging onto the freeway safer.  Now it's called the merge lane which i must assume to be interpreted as drive slowly until you get to the end of the lane, turn on your right-of-way signal, then proceed to cut off as many vehicles as necessary since you have indicated your intent on merging  slowly and have the right-of-way.

Please get up to speed and try to match the flow of traffic before you reach the end of the ramp and remember you do not have the right-of-way.  The car, truck or motorcycle already there has that privilege.  Also be aware that even though they are much smaller than you, motorcycles have the same right to be on the road as you do and that should not make them a target for your aggressions, and motorcyclist please try to remember that you are smaller and more difficult to see and you need to make sure the other drivers see you.

Now for the trucks!  We are BIG and you will not win in the end.  My average gross weight is 78000-79500 lbs.  For those of you weak on your math skills, that about 38-39 tons!  I can't stop on a dime, I can't swerve to get out of your way and it's going to take some time for me to get up to speed.  At those weights, if you make me slow down I may have to shift down 1 or 2 gears and that will mean anywhere from 1/2 mile to a couple of miles just to get back up to speed causing more delays for me and the other drivers you are so oblivious to.  Remember that no matter what it is or where you buy it, a truck like mine made it possible!

Adjust your driving to meet your surroundings, because some may not tolerate your lack of driving skills or we just may not see you as you're passing us on the right around a turn on the freeway on the shoulder because the lane ended 200 yards back.

Be safe and courteous.  Are the 15 seconds you might save really worth it?

I'm 100% behind your message -- trouble is, the people that NEED to read it not only likely WON'T, too damned many CAN'T!

Hmmmm...I can't find fault with any of your comments.  I suppose if some moron were passing me on the right, on the shoulder (this has happened to me, by the way), I'd probably try to let them bail out if they were facing death (e.g. a broken down car sitting inexplicably in the breakdown lane).  They would definitely get a long blast of the horn, though.  Fair is fair.

Right on! Especially about the 'merge' lanes, one of my biggest pet peeves (which also happens to endanger my life from time to time). If people can't get that one simple thing right, what hope do they ever have of NOT dying in their cars? Oh wait! GOOD DRIVERS are why the idiots don't end up dying in theirs cars as often as they could (should)! Good drivers anticipate your stupidity, morons!! And you're right, BigP, those people not only won't read this post, they wonder why this site even exists. Aah, ignorance is bliss....

Semis CAN stop on a dime - it's YOUR car that will be the dime!  When I return from fishing, towing my boat I get the same type of cutoff, thinking I can stop fast - NOT!  I usually ride behind the semis since I KNOW they cannot stop immediately and give them space.  At least I know the vehicle that just cut the semi off is now "road-kill" and I don't have to worry about another idiot cutting me off!

Good Blog! And I think we made history. I even wrote this down in my diary!

bigpedaler,  oddjob3422, ronin, and buttfish all agree on something!

I do have one comment, 79,500 lbs isn't 39 tons!
It's more like 39 3/4 tons.....I just thought I would clarify that....

As a CDL (with all the endorsements except passenger) carrying Grandmother I know exactly what you are talking about. Several times I watched people come down the ramp, signaled and never even looked in the mirror. I guess that's what they make ali arcs and train horns for...to wake these people up...real fast!

You could take it a step further, and argue about whether the tons were short tons (2000 lbs), long tons (2240 lbs) or metric tons (1000kg, 2204 lbs).

Then the calculation becomes hopelessly muddled.

Sheila, "Ali Arcs". You're talking about those "Moose Catcher" grill guards, right?
